Brief Synopsis
Danish girl, Julie Szabad met the film director, Hannes Schönemann, then a young man, while she was visiting East Germany on a cultural exchange programme. They fell in love. But soon after, Julie had to return to Denmark and the young couple were never able to see their love develop. During the course of the next 25 years, however, they met several times, fell in love again, married but not to each other - and wrote letters. Later Julie revealed that was a double agent for PET (the Danish secret service) and the Stasi. As the cold war began to draw to a close, Julie became more desperate and paranoid. She accused several of her associates - including Hannes - of being agents for the Stasi or terrorists and she trusted no-one. In the end, after a series of anonymous phone calls in 1990 -Julie Szabad committed suicide. In this very personal docmentary film, Hannes Schönemann depicts the young woman he fell in love with and tries to come to an understanderstanding of how the cold war affected her and the extent to which she was indeed mad.
